Dimensional weight, or DIM weight, is a pricing method where carriers charge based on a package’s size instead of its actual weight when the box is large and light. UPS and FedEx bill you for the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, so a bulky, near-empty box can cost far more than the scale suggests.

How is dimensional weight calculated?

Dimensional weight is calculated by multiplying a package’s length, width, and height, then dividing by the carrier’s DIM divisor. For UPS and FedEx domestic shipments the divisor is 139. You are billed on whichever is greater, the actual weight or the dimensional weight.

The formula:

(Length x Width x Height) ÷ 139 = dimensional weight in pounds

Example: a box measuring 20 x 18 x 12 inches is 4,320 cubic inches. Divided by 139, that is about 31 pounds of dimensional weight. If the actual contents weigh 8 pounds, you are still billed as if the package weighed 31 pounds. You pay for the empty space.

What is the DIM divisor 139?

The DIM divisor is the number carriers divide cubic size by to get dimensional weight. A lower divisor means higher billable weight. UPS and FedEx use 139 for most domestic shipments, so a smaller divisor on some accounts makes DIM charges even steeper.
